Rio Cuixmala Kayaking Tour: Active
If you like birding and beautiful riparian scenery, this is the tour for you. From La Manzanilla we drive about 45 minutes to our put-in on the Rio Cuixmala. With nearly 300 different species of birds in the area and the protected Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere on the right side of the river, the Rio Cuixmala is a unique sanctuary. After about an hour of paddling and birding we come to a beach which separates the now widened river from the open ocean. We continue into a thicker region of forest before stopping on the beach for a picnic lunch. From here you can view the Biosphere's founder's, James Goldsmith, castle in the distance. Birds include Purple Gallinule, Northern Jacana, social and boat-billed flycatcher, Green, Belted, and Ringed Kingfisher. Approximate time from arrival to departure: 8-10 hours. Includes: Insurance, sea kayak instruction and equipment, birding interpretation, binoculars, picnic lunch. Approx $110.
